This thesis study was carried out to examine how the vestibular system is affected in the presence of an optical illusion. The study was conducted on 27 male and 27 females, a total of 54, individuals studying at Istanbul Medipol University. Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials (VEMP) test and Video Head Impulse Test (vHIT) were applied to individuals volunteering to participate in the study. VEMP and vHIT tests were performed to the volunteers once in the absence of an optical illusion and afterwards in the presence of an optical illusion. In addition, after each test, whether the individuals feel balanced is questioned with a questionnaire. When the VEMP results of tests in the absence and presence of optical illusion were compared its seen that the latencies of the waves on the left side had shortened, while the amplitudes had increased (p?0.05). When vHIT results were compared, it was seen that the gains of the right lateral and bilateral anterior canals increased, approaching 1.0 (p?0.05). In this thesis, a situation where visual and vestibular inputs contradict each other with the help of optical illusion was created. It is thought that when the visual-vestibular inputs are incompatible with each other, the sensory reweighting mechanism is activated, and this mechanism strengthens the more reliable (vestibular) inputs, while suppressing the unreliable (visual) inputs. As long as the incompatible condition persist, the sensory reweighting mechanism will continue to operate, thanks to the feedback loop from the efferent vestibular system. As a result, it has been observed that the visual and vestibular systems work together to ensure balance. Although the mechanisms of these two systems, especially at the cortical and efferent levels, are unknown; our study shows that these two systems work together in an active interaction.
